First installed rue des Raines, in Verviers, the private language school GoLenguas, flooded in July 2021, then relocated to Place Albert 1er. The move allowed Roman Rusin to reopen his school just two months following the floods, while remaining in his hometown. For this Verviétois with an immeasurable smile, launching his project in the city center was obvious: “I really wanted to invest my time in this city, bring my little stone to the building.” An ambitious project that makes all the more sense as no other private language school currently exists in the city center of Verviers.

Creating his own business is also an opportunity for this young entrepreneur to follow in the footsteps of his mother, who has been self-employed in Verviers for 30 years. “She runs her own beauty salon and has done very well. too, so I thought to myself, why not me ? I started!” Despite the period of confinement and the floods, Roman Rusin’s project is doing quite well since GoLenguas will already begin its fourth year next September. “I am living proof that launching your project in Verviers works!”

Even if he recognizes that the city center of Verviers is no longer what it used to be, Roman Rusin considers that its potential is enormous. “It all depends on the motivation of those who invest in Verviers. My clients come mainly from the heights of Verviers, Spa or other surrounding towns, this is proof that we can still bring people to the center -city by offering a quality service!”

Apart from his lessons, this foreign language enthusiast also offers several learning activities in the region. During an English course, he notably took the children on a walk along the Vesdre. The opportunity for them to learn vocabulary related to nature and ecology while (re)discovering the city center. In September, Roman Rusin will open a new language school in Liège but he assures him, “Verviers will remain my main project. I will never leave here!”

Roman Rusin, a local mindset

Apart from his professional project, Roman Rusin also wishes to invest himself personally in Verviers.

The attachment of the young Verviétois for the old wool city goes well beyond his language school. Whether it is to buy his course books, make photocopies or go to a restaurant, Roman Rusin is particularly attentive to the idea of supporting Verviers shopkeepers. “I also encourage my students to go to their homes to buy what they need. It’s also how we make our city live“, he adds, confident regarding the future of Verviers.

Even if consuming local has been brought up to date for several years now, it is also a way for Roman Rusin to make himself known in the region. “That’s how word of mouth happens. It’s a bit like a circular economy, but at the local level: the more you give, the more you will receive in return. “A state of mind that he would like more young Verviétois to adopt.”Young people should stay in Verviers and invest in their city. I often hear that Verviers is dead and that it’s the worst city in the world. It’s wrong! I love Verviers and it’s possible to succeed here.
