Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes in Beijing, the capital of China, due to heavy rain and flooding caused by Typhoon Doksuri. More than 31,000 people were affected by the evacuation measures, state media reported on Monday. More than 180 flights were canceled at both airports in Beijing in the morning, and hundreds of flights were delayed, according to the flight-tracking app Flight Master.
While some record amounts of rain fell, trains got stuck overnight. Railway employees therefore provided travelers with food and drinking water. While the storm weakened, the weather agency maintained a high red alert for heavy rain as more rain and flooding were expected.
No major damage or casualties were reported in Beijing, according to state media. The effects of “Doksuri” were felt even more south of the capital. In Hebei province, media reports said a truck driver was missing following two trucks fell off a collapsed bridge in the city of Baoding on Sunday. In the city of Shijiazhuang, part of a freight train bridge was washed away by a swollen river. The heavy rains also flooded parts of Shanxi Province. The typhoon had already caused widespread flooding in the southern province of Fujian over the weekend. Hundreds of thousands of people had to leave their homes because of this.
“Doksuri” is one of the strongest storms to have swept across China in recent years. While the storm continues to weaken, meteorologists are already warning of the approaching typhoon Khanun, which is expected to hit the Chinese coast later this week.
