The Importance of Original Documents: Avoid Fines and Seizures by Presenting the Correct Papers

At best, this turns into an invitation to go to the police station in the days that follow. At worst a fine and seizure of the vehicle. “During a roadside check, you must necessarily present the original documents, confirm the policy. Only these show that you are in order, which is never the case with a copy. If you can only show copies, you run the risk of being fined and having your vehicle immobilized.”

A real scourge on the roads: uninsured drivers have caused the death of 160 people in ten years!

Some drivers use copies of on-board documents instead of the originals to limit the consequences of theft. “As laudable as the goal is, it is not the right process. To avoid theft, we recommend taking them with you instead. This way, they do not stay in your vehicle while you are away.”

If the police are intransigent, the absence of the original documents can also be so at the technical control. Recently, Marc, a resident of Mont-Saint-Guibert, had gone to the technical control, provided with a copy of the green certificate granted during his last visit. “The document was refused, explains the Guibertin. And I had to come back the next day. It cost me ten euros more for the ironing.”

Your technical inspection may have been exceeded without you noticing it: be careful, fines are raining down, here’s how to avoid a bad surprise

In the future, these inconveniences may well disappear. As part of his digital portfolio project, the Secretary of State for Digitalization, Mathieu Michel, wants to make all official digital documents legal. Clearly: the identity card, the driving license but also documents such as registration, technical control or conformity certificates should no longer be physically in the vehicle. Their official digital version might suffice. “Today, motorists must have all kinds of documents when they use their car, confides Mathieu Michel. This is sometimes difficult, for example when the vehicle is used by several people from the same family. That’s why, eventually, I want to make sure that all the necessary documents are available in the digital wallet. So you will always have them at your fingertips, via your smartphone. The digital wallet will make life easier for Belgians.”

Currently only the insurance card no longer requires a paper version. A digital version has been authorized since 2020. “Do not forget to share the document with other drivers, even occasional ones, warns the FPS Economy. Indeed, they must all be able to prove that the vehicle is well insured in the event of an inspection or accident.”
