Our analysis

10 choices of frozen fish burgers were analyzed. If the salmon is featured, there are some pancakes made with shrimp and pollock.

The portion of a patty was used to compare the products.
Each serving of a galette (65 to 142 g) provides:

145 to 370 calories 5 to 24 g of fat, including 0.5 to 5 g of saturated fat 0 to 15.5 g of carbohydrates 0 to 1 g of fiber 0 to 4 g of sugars 6 to 25 g of protein 260 to 740 mg of sodium

TOP CHOICES

Among the best choices are PC Blue Menu Wild Sockeye Salmon Burgers.

A 142g patty provides 160 calories, 7g fat, including 1g saturated fat and 1g omega-3, 24g protein and 390mg sodium. These patties are therefore among the richest in protein and the least rich in saturated fat and sodium on the test bench. Plus, the ingredient list is simple and short.

The seasoned salmon burgers from La Fée des Grèves are also a good option.

A 115 g pancake provides 220 calories, 13 g of fat, including 3 g of saturated fat, 25 g of protein and 370 mg of sodium. These patties are the highest in protein and among the lowest in sodium on the test bench. The ingredient list is short, but contains modified milk ingredients. Containing a little more sodium (410 mg) and sugars (2 g) than the previous choice, the salmon burgers with maple nuggets of the same brand are still doing well.

THE COMPROMISES

President’s Choice Atlantic Salmon Burgers are a good compromise.

A 142 g pancake provides 330 calories, 20 g of fat, including 2.5 g of saturated fat, 23 g of protein and 420 mg of sodium. These burgers are among the highest in protein on the test bench and their saturated fat content is similar to the average (2 g). However, the ingredient list contains sodium phosphate and sulphites.

Grizzly Smoked BBQ Salmon Burgers are also part of the compromises.

A 100 g patty provides 190 calories, 11 g of fat, including 1.5 g of saturated fat and 1 g of omega-3, 18 g of protein and 330 mg of sodium. These patties have a saturated fat and sodium content below the average for the products analyzed. In addition, the amount of protein is similar to the average (19 g). However, the list of ingredients contains some additives (eg sodium phosphate, silicon dioxide).

High Liner Crispy Breaded Fish Burgers complete the compromises.

A 66 g serving (one patty) contains 145 calories, 6.5 g of fat, including 0.5 g of saturated fat and 1 g of omega-3, and 305 mg of sodium. These patties are therefore among the least rich in saturated fat on the test bench. Plus, the ingredient list is short and simple. On the other hand, they are among the options with the lowest protein content (6 g).

THE LEAST GOOD CHOICES

Worse choices include President’s Choice Shrimp Burgers.

A 113 g pancake provides 150 calories, 5 g of fat, including 0.5 g of saturated fat, 14 g of protein and 600 mg of sodium. Although these patties were among the lowest in saturated fat on the test bench, they were also among the lowest protein and highest sodium options. Additionally, the ingredient list contains sodium phosphate, a food additive.

Ricardo’s Salmon Burgers with Barbecue Sauce and Roasted Peppers are also a poorer option.

A 142 g patty provides 320 calories, 19 g of fat, including 4 g of saturated fat, 23 g of protein and 740 mg of sodium. This product is the second highest in saturated fat and highest in sodium in the test. However, these patties have an above average protein content. The list of ingredients is long, but contains few additives (eg calcium disodium EDTA).

Finally, Blue-Water Seafoods fish burgers complement the worst choices.

A 65 g serving (one patty) contains 150 calories, 8 g fat, including 2.5 g saturated fat, 6 g protein and 260 mg sodium. These pancakes are therefore among the least rich in protein. In addition, the list of ingredients is long and contains several additives (eg coloring, flavoring substance, modified milk ingredients, sodium phosphate). However, their sodium content is the lowest on the test bench.

On average, fish patties have more protein than chicken patties, but they are higher in sodium. The main advantage? They provide good omega-3 fats!
