32 new trees, green beds and water features will ensure cooling in the future – more space and safety for pedestrians and cyclists – first section largely complete
Vienna (OTS) – The extensive redesign of Reinprechtsdorfer Strasse between Schönbrunner Strasse and Arbeitergasse is right on schedule. The popular shopping street has been transformed into a climate boulevard since the beginning of May with numerous greening, cooling and unsealing measures. With more than 30 new trees, wide sidewalks and plenty of space for comfortable and safe cycling, the quality of stay is significantly increased. Work is currently in full swing and the first section from Schönbrunner Straße to Margaretenstraße has already been largely completed.
“I am pleased that with the rapid construction progress, the great quality of stay that will be here in the future can already be guessed at. True to the motto “Get out of the asphalt”, more than 30 new trees, green beds and water features will soon provide refreshment. In addition, wide sidewalks and numerous seating areas invite you to stroll and linger. Margaretners can look forward to a significant improvement in the quality of life and stay in the district. Many thanks to the many dedicated employees who are driving the project forward so quickly!” said City Councilor Ulli Sima.
District manager Silvia Jankovic: “I walk by Reinprechtsdorfer Straße almost every day and look at the construction progress. I can hardly wait for the end result, because you can already see how the light-colored granite stones, the tree grates that have already been created and the greatly widened sidewalks make Reinprechtsdorfer Straße a beautiful place to be where Margaretners like to get together, chat, shop and work together will spend time.”
The redesign of Reinprechtsdorfer Straße between Schönbrunner Straße and Arbeitergasse is expected to be completed by November 2023. The second construction phase, starting from Arbeitergasse, is to be carried out following the completion of the underground work at the future U2 stations Reinprechtsdorfer Straße and Matzleinsdorfer Platz.
Cooling for a good microclimate
The summer heat once once more shows the need for a climate-friendly design of public street space. The area around Reinprechtsdorfer Straße is densely built-up and only has a few green spaces. Therefore, in the planning, particular attention was paid to increasing the proportion of green areas and to ensuring comprehensive unsealing and cooling in order to create the conditions for a pleasant microclimate even in the hot season and to increase the quality of life in the Grätzl.
First harbingers of the climate-friendly Reinprechtsdorfer Straße
What the newly designed Reinprechtsdorfer Straße will look like can already be guessed in the first construction phase between Schönbrunner Straße and Margaretenstraße – the construction of the roadway, cycle path, sidewalks, borders of green areas and a water feature has already been completed. Next, the floor markings are applied and the traffic signs are set up. The trees are planted in the fall as they thrive better when planted during cool to moderate temperature seasons.
Construction is currently underway in the section between Margaretenstrasse and Arbeitergasse. The roadway is being broken up here in order to be able to create the new road cross-section with wide paved sidewalks as well as generous green areas and tree grates. Construction work is also underway on Margaretenstrasse between Reinprechtsdorfer Strasse and Spengergasse.
Lots of greenery and water
By planting a total of 32 new trees, creating large green beds and paving the sidewalks with light-colored granite stones, the sealing of the ground area is significantly reduced and the microclimate is significantly improved. In addition to the shade of the trees, two water features, three fog steles and two drinking hydrants should bring fun and refreshment to Reinprechtsdorfer Straße, especially during the hot summer months. The adjoining section of Margaretenstrasse between Reinprechtsdorfer Strasse and Spengergasse will also be upgraded with two new trees and several beds of perennials, and with the opening for cycling once morest the one-way path, a gap in the cycling network will be closed.
More safety and comfort for pedestrians
In the course of the expansion of the U2 underground line and extensive pipe-laying work, Reinprechtsdorfer Straße became a one-way street in 2019. The one-way route in the direction of Matzleinsdorfer Platz has already reduced through traffic and gained more space for design options for greening and revitalization. With the redesign, the sidewalks on both sides of the street will be widened – by up to 6 meters – creating plenty of space for strolling and window shopping. The previously temporary one-way will now remain permanent. As with the climate boulevard in Thaliastraße, the sidewalks are designed almost at the same level as the road. In future, a kerbstone that is only three centimeters high will separate the roadway from the sidewalk. The height difference is only 15 centimeters in the bus stop area, which ensures barrier-free entry and exit from the bus. In the crossing areas, pavements and lane elevations improve visibility and crossing lengths – this also contributes to traffic safety.
A pleasant place to stay
The range of consumption-free seating will be significantly increased. 9 new benches, 14 individual armchairs and 32 individual seats on 12 granite elements will soon invite you to chat, relax and linger. In addition, 35 multifunctional areas will be available, two of which will be used permanently for bicycle parking facilities and four temporarily for the existing sidewalk café. Open spaces for movement or areas for loading activities and parking are other possible uses. In addition, the public lighting will be expanded and existing traffic lights will be adapted to the new traffic organization and street design.
Biking in both directions
Cycling once morest the one-way street on Reinprechtsdorfer Straße was already permitted. With the redesign measures, there will not only be more greenery, but there will still be enough space for cycling in both directions. In the section from Schönbrunner Strasse to Bräuhausgasse, a structurally separate one-way cycle path in the direction of the Wientalradweg will ensure the necessary road safety in the future, since two lanes intertwine in this area and there is a correspondingly increased potential for conflict. Five locations with bicycle parking facilities for a total of 36 bicycles complete the significantly expanded range for cyclists.
Kohlgasse also runs parallel to Reinprechtsdorfer Straße. As a newly created bicycle-friendly street, this represents the main cycle route through the district and is part of the traffic concept around Reinprechtsdorfer Straße. Here, too, a climate-friendly framework was created: 8 new XL trees, standard shrubs, additional greenery and new consumption-free micro-free spaces upgrade Kohlgasse.
Street party to celebrate the redesign
To celebrate the redesign, the “Reinprechtsdorfer Strassenfest” will take place on Friday, September 1, 2023, from 3 p.m. on the adjacent Siebenbrunnenplatz. Live music by “Wiener Wahnsinn”, DJ, culinary delights from the local gastro and numerous playful activities for children ensure a great atmosphere and culinary delights.
