Mayor of Mons Imposes Ban on Gatherings Near Station to Improve Security

A decree of the mayor of Mons, Nicolas Martin, prohibits, from July 31, gatherings of more than 5 people within the perimeter of Mons station. The decree “authorize the police services to carry out surveillance activities and systematic checks of both vehicles and their occupants as well as people on the public road within the perimeter of the station area“, said the Mons authorities in a press release.

A system was put in place in mid-July on the initiative of the mayor to combat the difficulties encountered in the district of rue Rogier and rue Léopold in Mons. This device followed other measures, in particular regular large-scale checks, given the growing insecurity in the district.

The municipal authorities had also set up a reinforced police presence following a settling of accounts in the station district on July 13. The goal was to “further increase police pressure and dislodge disturbers“.

According to local authorities, the first results are “very noticeable: problematic facts are in freefall“. 86 people and 19 vehicles were checked and around ten reports were drawn up.

Clean the axis of the station

The order issued by the mayor, prohibiting gatherings of more than 5 people in the station area, aims to accentuate the repressive system in place. It will come into effect for two months. It will then be evaluated and possibly extended. “We are deploying very significant resources on the ground to eradicate the presence of those who have nothing to do in the neighborhood“, indicated the mayor of Mons. “These are two strong measures, but I want to give the police all possible means to restore a normal situation in this neighborhood. The objective is clear and assumed: I want to clear the axis of the station of traffic and deploy a policy of harassment once morest those who have nothing to do in this part of the city“.
