Changwon Special City announced on the 30th that it congratulated Hanwha Aerospace along with 1.01 million citizens on being selected as the preferred bidder for the Australian government’s infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) introduction project.
This project is a ‘Land 400 Phase 3’ project to replace the US-made M133 armored vehicle introduced by the Australian Army in the past. Hanwha Aerospace was finally selected as the preferred bidder following competing with the German Lynx armored vehicle. The ‘Redback’ armored vehicle is a customized infantry fighting vehicle developed by Hanwha Aerospace and is known to have received favorable reviews locally for its functions optimized for the Australian operating environment and excellent performance.
The contract size is between 5 billion and 7 billion Australian dollars (4 to 6 trillion won), and at the time of the final contract, the Australian military will deploy 129 Redback armored vehicles from 2027. The superiority of the ‘Made in Changwon’ weapon system has been proven to the world through the selection of the preferred bidder this time, and it is expected that the vitality of the Changwon National Industrial Complex, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year, and the revitalization of the local commercial district will be revitalized.
Changwon City made a lot of efforts for this order. In 2021, the Australian Embassy in Seoul co-hosted the ‘Korea-Australia Defense Industry Cooperation Seminar’ at ADEX in Seoul, and last year, it signed an international friendship city agreement with Geelong, Australia, opening the door to defense industry cooperation with Australia.
In particular, in May, the Geelong City Manufacturing Committee, Deakin University, and Australian entrepreneurs were invited to the Geelong City Economic Mission to strengthen exchanges and cooperation.
Changwon Special Mayor Hong Nam-pyo said, “I congratulate the 1.01 million citizens on the selection of the preferred bidder for Hanwha Aerospace Redback.”
