Challenges for Tourism in Arcachon: Decreased Turnover and Visitor Spending

No official figure, but the restaurateurs and hoteliers contacted by France Bleu Gironde mention drops of 10 to 15% in their turnover. There are fewer summer visitors than expected, but above all they consume less in the restaurants and shops of the seaside town.

France Bleu Gironde: How do you judge the start of the summer season?

Didier Arino : Indeed this year the Bassin d’Arcachon is not breaking attendance records. The month of July even got off to a rather sluggish start. With a drop in attendance but also a drop in consumption for some traders and restaurateurs. There is therefore both a problem of customer volume and level of expenditure.

How can this double drop be explained?

There are several phenomena. The first is the consequence of last year’s fires. Then the high-end clientele returned to foreign destinations. And then we see this year that the destinations known to be expensive are a little more difficult to fill. This is the case in Arcachon where for 3 years the price of accommodation has increased by 30% on average. This year the French have planned a slightly larger holiday budget than usual with 2,450 euros per household, but they are struggling to keep up with these increases.

What are the prospects for the rest of the season?

Attendance should be quite correct in August but there is still availability from almost all operators. And it is not insignificant that the last week of August is the busiest. It is also the cheapest of the month. After the post-covid carpe diem, it’s vacation yes, but not at any price!
