Francesco is a connected pot that allows our plants to talk. This new technology has just been launched and it will surely delight gardeners. If you want to know more regarding Francesco, this article is for you!

The origins of the Francesco connected pot

The “Francesco” connected pot was created by four students from the Australian National University (UNA). It is equipped with sensors that monitor soil moisture, the amount of sunlight, and electrical signals from plants.

They made it as part of a university course. The Francesco connected pot has an animated face on its LCD screen. Moreover, it is 3D printed. In addition to monitoring the plant, he shares funny anecdotes and dances to “Toxic” by Britney Spears. It’s his favorite song!

A deep connection with plants

Two of the creators of the Francesco connected pot are Jasper Lang and Brinda Murlikrishna. They told ABC Radio Canberra that it was regarding helping people. Furthermore, their goals are tohelping people understand and connect with their plants.

For example, when Francesco needs water, sun or company, he can inform his owner by speaking. This ability is truly remarkable, especially because it is a flowerpot.

Mr. Lang said, “We wanted to bring the kind of invisible life of plants to life. So he wanted to show aspects that we don’t see every day. Francesco aims to create a deeper connection between the individual and their indoor plants. Moreover, it also allows a deeper empathy towards nature in general.

Remedy for involuntary forgetfulness

Ms. Murlikrishna explained that the idea for the smart pot came from their own experience of inadvertently forgetting indoor plants. “Some of us, myself included, have been guilty of not taking good care of our plants,” she says. “We had a discussion regarding the tool that might remind people to take care of it in a friendly and humorous way. »

Although connected flower pots are not a new idea, she pointed out a fact. What makes Francesco unique is his “special personality”. “Usually, a connected device just gives measurements or sensor values,” she said. “But Francesco talks and tells a lot of amusing anecdotes. »

How “Francesco” the connected pot works

Francesco uses electrodes glued to one of the leaves of the plant to detect electrical signals. Thus, he is able to interpret what she might feel. “Plants produce electrical signals similar to those we produce in our nerves. And we can detect them,” he explained.

The animated face of the Francesco connected pot changes according to electrical signals from the plant. This gives a “pretty basic interpretation” of the mood of the plant.
