The exercise was carried out simultaneously in the 24 provincial electoral delegations to test the technical and operational processes of the elections. At the same time, it allowed the National Electoral Council (CNE) to optimize its procedures to carry out the elections and deliver the results in the shortest possible time.

The electoral simulation was supervised by political organizations, observers and the media.

Among the processes reviewed during this session were the operation of the polling stations, the components of the system for the transmission and publication of minutes and results (including the computerized system for counting the votes) and the security plan to prevent incidents, at times in which the South American nation faces an upsurge in violent acts.

In the upcoming elections, the new President and Vice President of the country will be elected, as well as the 137 members of the National Assembly. It is also expected that two popular consultations will be held on the prohibition of mining activities in the Yasuní national park, in the Amazon and in the natural reserve known as Chocó Andino.

The president of the CNE, Diana Atamaint, appreciated that the preparation of these elections becomes a challenge due to the short period of time available. The next drill is expected to take place on August 13.

The call for these early general elections was issued following President Guillermo Lasso decreed the “cross death” on May 17, through which he also dissolved the National Assembly. This event occurred on the eve of Parliament ruling on a political trial of the president, accused of the alleged crime of embezzlement.
