Moscow was attacked by drones overnight, not for the first time this month. Videos show an explosion in a business district, a security guard is said to be injured. The Kremlin blames Ukraine for the attack.

The Russian capital Moscow has once more become the target of a drone attack. One of the three attacking Ukrainian drones was shot down and two others “were eliminated by electronic warfare,” the Russian Defense Ministry said. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin wrote on Telegram: “Ukrainian drones attacked last night.” The facade of two office buildings was slightly damaged. The state news agency TASS reported in the morning, citing rescue services, that a security guard was injured.

Not verified videos, circulating on social media, shows an explosion in a business district that is largely deserted in the early hours of the morning. Moscow Vnukovo Airport in the south-west of the Russian capital has been temporarily closed to departures and arrivals, according to TASS. Flights have been diverted. Operations continued at other airports in the region.

In early July, Russia said it had shot down five Ukrainian drones that were disrupting operations at Vnukovo Airport. Moscow is around 500 kilometers from the Russian-Ukrainian border. The urban area and the surrounding area of the capital were initially only rarely targeted during the Ukraine war. Recently, however, there have been several drone attacks on Moscow, for which Russian authorities blame Ukraine. Russia’s foreign ministry said such attacks “would not be possible” without NATO support for Ukraine.

Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for the attacks on Russian territory. Since the beginning of the war, Moscow has regularly shelled the capital Kiev with drones, rockets and cruise missiles.
