The promoted team had to admit defeat to the WAC away 1:2 (0:1) in the first round on Saturday, Thierno Ballo secured the well-deserved victory of the Carinthians with a brace (3rd, 50th). The Upper Austrian goal by Simon Pirkl (90th) came too late.
The game started with a dream goal: Ballo lobbed the ball past the blue and white defender Danilo Mitrovic on the penalty area and volleyed into the corner with a right. After that, the Wolfsbergers stayed at the helm, but nothing more than a shot from a tight angle by Bernhard Zimmermann (25th) was parried by Linz goalie Nicolas Schmid for the time being.
Towards the end of the first half, WAC became more compelling once more: After a corner from Jonathan Scherzer, Dominik Baumgartner headed wide from close range (45+3), a few seconds later Simon Piesinger chased the ball over the crossbar from around four meters. With the exception of the 34th minute – Ronivaldo unsuccessfully called for a penalty following a duel with Piesinger – there was practically nothing to be seen from Linz on the offensive.
