Franz Welser-Möst had to pass at short notice due to an acute orthopedic operation. Philippe Jordan was the name of the ideal stand-in, as the 48-year-old Swiss had already provided a musically distinctive and coherent “Macbeth” at the Vienna State Opera in June 2021. He now succeeds in doing so at the Salzburg Festival, where he has the same dream team at his disposal in the form of the sovereign Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, capable of all colors, and the highly present, hugely cast concert association of the Vienna State Opera Chorus (rehearsal: Jörn Hinnerk Andresen). A lot of feeling for sharp, merciless passages up to melancholic sadness, for chamber music chasing up to impasto sound power, plus a sensitive echo sounder for the musical depth: Giuseppe Verdi would have appreciated Jordan’s interpretation of his favorite opera very much.
