[시사저널e=유호승 기자] Hanwha Aerospace won the project to introduce armored vehicles from the Australian government following five years of hard work. When the final contract is signed, the order backlog is expected to exceed 30 trillion won. The company plans to speed up the preparation of a foothold for sustainable growth by investing the profits earned on the ground in new space businesses.
According to Hanwha Aerospace on the 30th, the Redback was selected as the preferred model for negotiation among the two final candidates for the infantry fighting vehicle of the ‘LAND 400 Phase 3 Project’, a modernization project of the Australian military. Redback is an armored vehicle planned and developed by Hanwha Aerospace for export.
Initially, ‘Ajax’ of General Dynamics of the US, ‘CV90’ of BAE Systems of the UK, and ‘Lynx’ of Rheinmetall of Germany participated in the bidding for this project.
After that, in September 2019, two models, Redback and Lynx, were nominated for the final nomination. After a five-year competition with Germany, a defense powerhouse, Hanwha Aerospace was finally selected as the preferred bidder.
The Australian military started the project to replace the American-made M113 armored vehicles introduced in the 1960s. When the final contract is signed, the Australian military will sequentially deploy 129 Hanwha Redbacks from the second half of 2027.
The business scale is regarding 6 trillion won. Hanwha Aerospace’s order backlog as of the first quarter of this year is 19.927 trillion won, and it is expected to exceed 30 trillion won if the redback project in Australia and the work won in Poland in the second quarter are combined.
An official from Hanwha Aerospace said, “The K9 self-propelled howitzers and Cheonmu multiple launch rockets to be exported to Poland will soon start production and be recognized in sales from the fourth quarter of this year.” We expect that work and exports will increase further.”
Profits generated on the ground are invested in new space businesses. Hanwha Aerospace is recognized for its technology and competitiveness through the Korean launch vehicle Nuriho. Since the business is still in its infancy, large profits are not yet generated. The operating profit of the aerospace division in the second quarter of this year was 5.5 billion won.
Jeong Dong-ik, a researcher at KB Securities, said, “With the success of the third launch of the Nuri, Hanwha Aerospace has established itself as Korea’s leading aerospace company. I think it will grow,” he predicted.
