Madagascar Poliomyelitis Epidemic: Vaccination Campaign Launched to Combat the Spread

Since September 2020, Madagascar has been facing an upsurge in poliomyelitis cases. To fight once morest this epidemic, the local authorities launched this week a vaccination campaign, the second of the year.

Madagascar is currently facing an upsurge in cases of poliomyelitis. According to figures from the World Health Organization, 287 cases have been confirmed in the territory since September 2020. Among these cases, 79 were reported in 2023. They are distributed in 30 districts of 13 regions of the big island. The WHO added that 45 patients, including 2 adults, were affected by acute flaccid paralysis.

A polio vaccination campaign

Faced with an epidemic that is causing concern in the country, the Malagasy authorities have launched a vaccination campaign once morest poliomyelitis, the second of the year. More than 20 million vaccines have been prepared and nearly 18 million people have been targeted by this initiative to stem the spread of the disease.

The targeted adults

Four regions have been identified as priorities, namely Analamanga, Vakinankaratra, Alaotra Mangoro and Atsimo Andrefana. The call for vaccination in these areas has extended to adults. For the other regions, the campaign mainly focused on the vaccination of children under 15 years of age.
