Groundbreaking ABS Study Explores Potential of Commercial Nuclear Propulsion

The transformational impact of nuclear propulsion on the design, operation and emissions of a 14k TEU container ship and a 157k DWT Suezmax oil tanker were shaped by ABS and Herbert Engineering Corp. (HEC) in a groundbreaking study.

ABS commissioned HEC to carry out the study to explore the potential of advanced technology in modern commercial marine propulsion reactors. The study is designed to help the industry better understand the feasibility and safety implications of nuclear propulsion and to support future development projects.

The study, which involved input from leading nuclear reactor developers, modeled the impact of two 30 MW lead-cooled fast reactors on the container ship, finding that it would likely increase carrying capacity and operational speed, eliminating the need for refueling during throughout its 25-year lifespan. On the Suezmax vessel, the study found that adding four 5 MW heat pipe microreactors, as the carrying capacity decreases, would increase operating speeds and only require refueling once during its 25-year lifespan. Both concept ships would emit zero CO2.

However, many questions remain to be answered and it is essential that the industry evaluates these technologies with a view to security.”

The US Department of Energy (DOE) awarded ABS a contract to research barriers to the adoption of advanced nuclear propulsion in commercial vessels. DOE has also engaged ABS to support research into thermoelectric integration of a nuclear propulsion system on a commercial vessel being performed by the University of Texas.
