Peking (ots/PRNewswire) – The Chengdu Universiade officially opened on Friday night in the capital of southwest China’s Sichuan Province, known as the home of giant pandas and one of China’s busiest cities.
Ahead of the opening ceremony of the 31st summer edition of the FISU World University Games, Chinese President Xi Jinping has held a series of high-level face-to-face meetings with foreign leaders attending the ceremony in recent days.
Behind the tight diplomatic schedule, Xi has highlighted the importance of solidarity, cooperation and building a community with a shared future for humanity – three key messages also shared by the visiting leaders of Indonesia, Guyana, Georgia, Mauritania and Burundi became.
solidarity
In a toast at a welcome banquet on Friday noon, Xi said the Games have always been “a celebration of youth, solidarity and friendship” since their inception.
“We should promote solidarity through sport, build positive energy throughout the international community, tackle global challenges such as climate change, the food crisis and terrorism together, and create a better future through cooperation,” he said.
Solidarity, unity and togetherness was also one of the main themes in the Chinese President’s separate meetings with Indonesian President Joko Widodo, Guyanese President Irfaan Ali, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani and Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye.
For example, during the meeting with the Burundian leader, Xi stressed the importance of China-Africa solidarity in safeguarding the common interests of developing countries and international fairness and justice.
cooperation
At the leaders’ meetings, China and the five countries agreed to further cooperation in areas such as trade, infrastructure and people-to-people exchanges.
Meeting with Xi on Thursday, Widodo said Indonesia stands ready to further expand cooperation with China in areas such as investment, marine fisheries, food security and healthcare. Following the meeting, the heads of state and government signed bilateral cooperation documents.
China and Georgia will make a joint statement during Garibashvili’s historic visit and announce the establishment of a strategic partnership. Xi hailed the remarkable achievements in various areas of cooperation between the two countries over the past 31 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties, while the Georgian premier said that expanding bilateral ties will bring more opportunities for his country.
On Friday, China and Mauritania also signed a cooperation plan to jointly build the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to strengthen bilateral ties.
A community with a shared future for humanity
The notion of building a community with a shared future for humanity was repeatedly emphasized during the leaders’ meetings, with Indonesia, Guyana, Georgia, Mauritania and Burundi also expressing their support for the initiatives proposed by China.
In his meeting with Xi on Friday followingnoon, Ghazouani said Mauritania supports the BRI, the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative. These initiatives are in line with international relations norms that respect the independence and sovereignty of countries and exchanges between different civilizations.
Speaking at the welcome banquet, Xi stressed the importance of deepening exchanges and mutual learning to promote harmony without uniformity in the spirit of inclusion and regarding different cultures with an attitude of mutual appreciation and mutual learning.
“The Chengdu Games should be an opportunity to uphold the common values of mankind and write a new chapter in building a community with a common future for mankind,” Xi said.
In an interview with CGTN, Ali, the President of Guyana, said the games go beyond just young athletes’ competitions.
“They can share their experiences, culture and identity to build a stronger human family,” he said.
