If you’re eagerly awaiting The Lords of the Fallen, that’s good: the Hexworks studio has just released a generous gameplay video… To make your life easier, here is a complete summary.

Tired of waiting for the Elden Ring DLC? On October 13, a new “Souls-like” action-RPG will arrive on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series, The Lords of the Fallen… If you have a feeling of deja vu, that’s normal, it’s the sequel to Lords of the Fallen – without the “the” – from 2014. A title that did not thrill the crowds at the time, with an average of 70% on Metacritic. Our test mentioned in particular “a layer of heaviness” on the gameplay side, despite “a game system full of beautiful ideas”. Almost ten years later: CI Games has traded its place of developer for that of publisher, and founded the company Hexworks to bring this second part to life. “The game is much larger (…) darker and more difficult” notes Cezar Virtosu, creative director of the project. To walk the talk, the team has just shared a long gameplay of 17 min. We broke it down.

Two worlds in one

This is the first time that The Lords of the Fallen has presented its mechanics in detail. First, remember that the adventure takes place in a world “5 times larger” than the first opus – and that it is divided into two kingdoms. Axiom, home of the living, and Umbral, inhabited by the dead. As can be seen in the gameplay (available below), the player evolves “by default” in Axiom, but can open a window at any time to see what is hidden in the followinglife, thanks to the Umbral Lamp. The player will often have to use this object, insofar as the universe of the deceased contains other “paths, enemies, characters, treasures”. However, to move from one world to another, you have to sacrifice one of your lives (there are two before Game Over). Simply put, if you fall in battle in Axiom, you’ll be transported “to the other side” for a second chance.

The developers at Hexworks warn us, “it’s not so easy to return to the world of the living”. To do this, you will need to get your hands on a Vestige – equivalent to the campfires of Dark Souls (and which are also used to increase your characteristics). Note that these resting places can be created in various places in Axiom, such as following a boss, but at a “significant resource cost”. In the video, the studio did not dwell on the resources in question, but we imagine a system of souls à la FromSoftware, where each enemy brings you a little “money”.

“Faster fights”

In any case, whether in the world of the dead or the living, you will have to know how to defend yourself to survive. On its official website, Hexworks describes its baby fights as “faster” than in the first Lords of the Fallen – known for its heavy action… At a first glance, in the sequel: the rhythm of the combo “ sword | shield” even feels slightly more dynamic than in an Elden Ring, for example. This will of course depend on your class – there are nine of them – and your choices in terms of improvement. Later in the video, the team talks regarding the presence of three schools of magic, Umbral, support-oriented Radiant, and Rhogar. The latter has the right to more screen time and obeys a key word, pyromancy. During the presentation, several spells are shown, including one that sends long-range fireballs, and one that summons flaming monsters.

On the sidelines of magic, more “down-to-earth” tools (bow, crossbow, disposable) are also included. In total, it will be possible to have up to four ranged skills for “immediate access”, notes Hexworks… Above all, all players will be able to call upon Soul Flaying, thanks to the Umbral Lamp. This “devastating ability” allows, provided you have a soul charge, to literally rip out your opponent’s spirit, opening the way to heavy damage. Obviously, the studio has not revealed all the mechanics of The Lords of the Fallen! During the presentation, we can notably see a parry followed by a counter-attack, and charged spectral attacks.

The new Elden Ring ?

All in all: Hexworks’ production is attractive, despite animations that don’t seem at the – stratospheric – level of FromSoftware games… The technique is there (thanks to the Unreal Engine 5), the management artistic too, the gameplay seems solid. Basically, the lights are green for this adventure between the world of the living and the dead. An adventure where you will have to prevent the resurrection of the demon Adyr, by playing as a Dark Crusaders. We can’t wait to see more.
