The Dutchman was just eleven thousandths of a second faster in his Red Bull than Australian Oscar Piastri in the McLaren in the shootout qualification on Saturday. The Spaniard Carlos Sainz came in third in a Ferrari.

For the sprint (4:30 p.m.) over the shortened distance, the eight best drivers receive points for the World Championship classification. The winner gets eight points, the eighth one. So far this season there have been two sprint decisions. In Baku, Sergio Perez prevailed before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and his stable rival Verstappen on the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.

For the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday (3 p.m. / all live ServusTV, Sky), the second Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc had already secured pole position on Friday. Qualifying winner Verstappen is relegated five places on the grid due to an unauthorized gearbox change and will start the race from position six.
