With its latest update, Elden Ring unwittingly resurrects a controversial SoulsBorne mechanic. Pure evil bliss for some players, terrible pain for others.

update 1.10 is available

Busy with the upcoming release of Armored Core VI : Fires of RubiconFromSoftware still continues to maintain its latest, the now legendary Elder Ring. A few days ago, the Japanese studio shared patch 1.10 aimed at fixing various bugs and performing some balancing.

Among other things, balance damage has been increased for all weapons as well as some spells and incantations. Also, on certain attacks, the damage reduction has been increased. In fact, this update seems primarily intended to make the slowest builds more viable. But not only.

The Ultimate SoulsBorne Technique

This update is also focused on critical hits, a technique well known to SoulsBorne players which consists of inflicting enormous damage on opponents by hitting them at a precise angle, either from the front when they are destabilized, or directly from behind. And that’s where this update gets in the way.

Unlike its predecessors, Elden Ring had greatly reduced the trigger area for back critical hits. It’s still viable in the game, but this attack was much easier to perform in previous SoulsBorne, which resulted in PvP “backstab fishing”, or when players circled around their opponents in order to easily land a hit. critical.

Except that with this update, FromSoftware has greatly facilitated the use of this technique. On Reddit, players are already having fun modifying this mechanic, which is now completely abused. As one of the users points out, it only took the player stepping slightly sideways towards their opponent to hit them and trigger the animation. This update therefore makes this technique almost inevitable, but it is not impossible that FromSoftware is already working to reduce the angle of these devastating blows.
