Being cold to the point of wearing a scarf during a heat wave: this is the paradox that some people experience because of air conditioning. “As soon as I stay more than ten minutes in an air-conditioned place, I get cold”complains Mireille, 66, reporting recurring sore throats.

Runny nose and cough are also common symptoms. “All this is due to the repeated passages from hot to cold”says Solange, preparer at the Nice-Europe pharmacy. “I’m eternally cold, and with the air conditioning, it’s worse. Some stores put it on full blast while keeping the doors wide open”denounces Marie-Christine, 66 years old.

Joint pain

“I have fragile joints. I have pain in my neck every time I stay still in an air-conditioned place. That’s why I don’t go out without a scarf anymore”laments Françoise, 60 years old. “Some people complain regarding the air conditioning because they already have osteoarthritis. They get torticollis because the cold tenses the muscles”confirms the pharmacist.

But where is the air conditioning considered too strong? “My son recently caught a cold in the car”notes Aurore, 41 years old. “The air conditioning is particularly dangerous there because the freshness comes from the front”explains Elisabeth, of the Avenue pharmacy. “I have already been cold while taking the bus”over Marie-Christine.

Wear a scarf

Department stores, supermarkets and workplaces are also singled out by some. “In my office, I campaign for air conditioning, but many of my colleagues fall ill. Personally, I find it pleasant, but they are firmly opposed to it”says Julien, 35 years old.

To prevent symptoms due to exposure to air conditioning, no secret: “You must bring a scarf or a small vest”recommends Solange, from the Nice-Europe pharmacy.
