Air conditioning at 24 degrees, curtains closed and hydration. At the Sacré Cœur retirement home in Orange (Vaucluse), the measures taken by the management to protect residents from high heat are numerous.
Advance precautions have been taken since last June by this Ehpad. Caregivers were able to undergo training on the risks of high heat on an elderly person. “With the heavy workload that the staff has during this period, we have decided to hire someone all summer until September 30”, says Hélène Mogbil, director for almost a year.“The goal is to permanently hydrate the 90 residents in a targeted manner and according to their particular diets”she says.
Verification and prevention
Despite air conditioning in the health facility, rooms and common areas, patients “dehydrate quickly”.
“From breakfast to the evening meal, we check that carafes and glasses of water are made available to residents”, details Julie, caregiver since February. “Then we make sure that the people we care for drink water regularly, even if they are less on the move”she explains.
As a reminder, nursing homes are required to have at least one air-conditioned collective space. A requirement that follows the deadly heat wave of 2003 which largely affected the elderly and caused 19,000 deaths.
