Rome ∙ Did the old Roman traders who came by ship fill those ‘Amphora’ jars with wine or other special dishes? A shipwreck and merchant vessels recovered from the Mediterranean Sea by Italy’s heritage protection police have turned into an archaeological treasure. A 20-meter-long shipwreck in the 1st or 2nd century BC was found at a depth of 524 feet near the port city of Civitavecchia near Rome.
Ceramic and metal jars known as amphorae are also a remnant of the commercial prosperity of the Roman Empire’s heyday. Hundreds of such jars were found among the shipwrecks, resting on the bottom of the sea as if laid out for trade. Research will also be done to find out what was filled in these.
