SPORTS EDITORIAL – Los Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss has vowed to retire LeBron James’ jersey, which also means displaying it hanging from the rfollowings at Crypto.com Arena, once the player is inducted into the Hall of Fame of the NBA.
Buss explained in statements to Sportskeeda that the Lakers will retire the player’s jersey even if James does not finish his career with the team.
“The norm to retire the jersey like Lakers is that the player enters the Hall of Fame. I have no doubt that LeBron will reach the Hall of Fame. When he does, we will retire his jersey,” he said.
With Buss’ commitment, the real question is which jersey will be retired.
James played number 23 during his first three seasons with the Lakers. But for the 2021-2022 season, James chose to race number 6.
And the player has already indicated that he will adopt the number 23 once more for next season as a mark of respect for Bill Russell, the legendary Boston Celtics player who competed with the number 6.
The NBA retired the number 6 on all teams in the league following Russell’s death in July 2022.
The Lakers have already retired the two numbers worn by one of their players on one occasion: the jerseys with numbers 8 and 24 worn by the late Kobe Bryant.
The other jerseys retired by the Lakers are: Wilt Chamberlain’s 13; Pau Gasol on the 16th; Elgin Baylor on the 22nd; Gail Goodrich’s 25; Magic Johnson’s 32; Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s 33rd; Saquille O’Neal’s 34; James Worthy’s 42; Jerry West’s 44; Jamaal Wilkes’ 52; and the 99 by George Mikan.
Precisely, the last number withdrawn by the Lakers was that of the Spanish Gasol on March 7, 2023.
Bronny James, son of the basketball superstar, suffered cardiac arrest at USC basketball practice. This is what is known regarding his condition.
