Vivo reached a good sales index following the launch of its new intermediate and basic cell phones, allowing the company to assume the leadership of the Chinese smartphone market, as pointed out by the Canalys this Friday (28).
With 18% market share, vivo practically tied with its “sister” company, OPPO, which also saw the shipment of 11.4 million units shipped to retailers from China. This means that the giants of the segment managed to overcome the market share from Apple, which dropped to 16%, with 10.4 million shipments.
It is worth noting that the survey addresses data referring to the shipment of cell phones for sale in retail stores, therefore, it does not reflect direct sales to consumers. Instead, the data may indicate demand for the respective companies’ products over the months, as reduced shipments suggest fuller stocks.
Other manufacturers that are among the top five in the Chinese market are Honor and Xiaomi, with 10.3 million and 8.6 million units shipped in the last quarter. These were the companies that suffered the most significant negative swings compared to last year’s performance, according to the survey.
Apple is the only one among the top five manufacturers in the ranking that did not register a drop in shipments compared to the same period in 2022. The North American giant increased its shipments by 5%, while its biggest rivals had a retraction of up to 21%.
“Chinese consumers are increasingly willing to pay for high-quality products,” said Amber Liu, an analyst at Canalys. “The average selling price of cell phones surpassed US$450 in 2022, and is expected to continue rising in the coming quarters.”
Still according to the specialist, the newly launched folding cell phones in the Chinese market — such as the Honor Magic V2, vivo X Fold 2 and Huawei Mate X3 — have aroused interest among consumers. A recent analysis shows that Huawei, OPPO and Samsung are competing fiercely for leadership in the segment in China.

Toby Zhu, an analyst at Canalys, comments on the overall 5% retraction of China’s smartphone market. According to him, the market should show a moderate recovery in the second half of 2023, which is partially in line with the expectations of other specialists, who expect to see better results in 2024.
