One dead in a fire in Göllersdorf prison

An inmate died in a fire on Friday in the early hours of the morning in the Göllersdorf prison (Hollabrunn district). The 44-year-old might only be recovered dead, confirmed police spokesman Raimund Schwaigerlehner on request to a “Heute” online report. Investigations into the cause of the fire are being conducted by the State Criminal Police Office of Lower Austria and an expert from the Federal Criminal Police Office. According to the report, six officers were taken to the hospital.

According to the police, the fire started in the smoking room. The fire department was alerted to a room fire just before 3:30 a.m. The emergency services reported heavy smoke. One prisoner was rescued by the fire brigade, for the Austrian citizen any help came too late. The public prosecutor’s office in Korneuburg has ordered an autopsy.
