Correios started notifying its customers regarding tax exemptions for their shopping on international websites through the Federal Government’s Conforming Remittance Program, which comes into effect as of August 1st.

Under the Conforming Remittance program, the import rate for purchases of up to US$ 50 (regarding R$ 236.90 at current prices) is zero when the company, national or foreign, is a participant in the initiative promoted by the federal government.

Another point highlighted by Correios is that for customers who do not have the advance collection of taxes, the exemption rule remains the same for this type of situation, that is, only the exemption from individual to individual.

On the other hand, on websites that adhere to the Conforming Remittance Program, ICMS will be charged for purchases made. The measure applies to purchases transported both by the Post Office and by courier companies and does not depend on whether the sender is an individual or legal entity.

The Revenue noted that the fact that the payment of taxes due is carried out in advance will cause the remittances to be released before their arrival in the national territory, providing agility gain to operators and carriers.

The government’s measure was celebrated by most consumers, but was heavily criticized by Brazilian retailers. Industry entities claim that the tax exemption for foreign websites will cause layoffs in Brazil.
