Ducati: Leading the Way in Motorcycle Technology Innovations

Due to the much tighter installation space, it often takes some time for technologies from automobiles to find their way onto motorcycles. ABS has long been a mandatory standard, and traction control, which can be equated with ESP, is also a matter of course in many models today. It first came onto the market in 2008 with the Ducati 1098 R. The brand is now at the forefront of a range of technical solutions for motorcycles.

The latest example is the extended cylinder deactivation introduced at the Multistrada V4 Rally this year, in which the two rear cylinders are deactivated in the partial load range in order to reduce fuel consumption and heat generation. So far, this only worked when the engine was idling and now it can also be used while driving.

Arguably an even more important technical milestone was the introduction of the world’s first adaptive cruise control on a motorcycle. The radar system introduced in 2020 also enabled the implementation of a first blind spot warning system. Here, too, the Multistrada was the forerunner. In 2018, a slide-by-brake system was used for the first time on the Panigale, which enables controlled sliding when braking. Four years earlier, Ducati had pioneered motorcycle airbags with the Multistrada 1200 Touring D-Air, developed jointly with Dainese. It was the first production motorcycle with an integrated system that sends a trigger signal to the airbag jacket within 20 milliseconds in the event of a fall or a slide.

Numerous other solutions from the past few years also come from Ducati: One year following the 1098 R with the world’s first traction control, the Streetfighter 1100 was the first with LED headlights. 2010 and 2011 saw the launch of Riding Modes (Multistrada 1200 S) and a TFT instrument display (Diavel). And the 1199 Panigale brought the full LED headlight and electronic engine brake management to the motorcycle world in 2012. (awm)
