The remains of a German mountaineer, missing since 1986, have been found on a glacier in the Swiss Alps, according to a press release from the cantonal police of Valais published Thursday.
Due to global warming, receding glaciers are increasingly bringing up climbers, whose disappearance was reported decades ago.
On July 12, mountaineers discovered human remains and several pieces of equipment on the Theodule glacier in southern Switzerland.
These remains were transported to the forensic medicine department of the Valais Hospital in Sion, to be examined there. “A DNA comparison made it possible to establish that it was indeed the mountaineer who had disappeared since September 1986”, indicated the Valais police.
This German mountaineer, then 38 years old, had been reported missing following not returning from a mountain hike.
Research carried out at the time had not been successful.
