A Apple reached an agreement to expand its research and development center in the city of Irvine, in the US state of California. The company already occupies more than 10 thousand square meters there, in a place called Spectrum Terrace, next to Apple Park, and will now expand its campus there.
According to information from Orange County Business JournalApple leased two floors of a four-story building, totaling more than 5 mil m² of area to be occupied from December of this year. The offices are located on Laguna Canyon Highway and were leased by the same real estate company that leased the buildings located on Spectrum Terrace.
Along with renting the area, Maçã also opened dozens of vacancies of software engineers and researchers. Job postings include some directed towards a division dedicated to radio frequency integrated circuits — which is the chip used by the companies’ main devices to emit and receive radio waves.
Engineers would also be hired to develop semiconductors for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. In addition to Qualcomm, Apple also acquires wireless chips from a company called Skyworks, which is from the city of Irvine. For some time now, the company has been seeking to reduce its dependence on these suppliers, in order to develop its own components.
Analysts, however, also consider that these R&D centers will be able to better test and inspect the components purchased from local suppliers. To get an idea of the interdependence, 58% of Skyworks’ deals in 2022 were with Apple — the company is the fourth largest in Orange County.
Thus, although there is speculation that Apple has paused the development of its own Wi-Fi modem, it is notable that such a project is important for the company, so that it should be resumed in the future.
