UAE thinkers
The UAE has emerged as a pioneer in adopting the “green transition”, giving priority to sustainable development and preserving the environment. In this regard, the state’s efforts must be accompanied by sufficient support for scientific research, as a vital element in the transformation process. I would like to make three suggestions in this regard:
As for the first proposal, it is the unification of scientific research initiatives between research centers, universities, government agencies and the private sector, because the existence of repeated and similar initiatives may represent a challenge to the effectiveness of scientific research in this direction, and because the unification of scientific research initiatives is also vital to the success of green transformation in the UAE through cooperation between various stakeholders, in terms of adopting a comprehensive and applied approach to meet the challenges of green transformation. By pooling resources, knowledge and experience, research centers, universities, government agencies and the private sector can work together to develop innovative solutions for sustainability, renewable energy and environmental preservation. This collaboration will also enhance the exchange of knowledge and interdisciplinary, industry-oriented research, leading to more effective and applicable results.
The second suggestion is that the UAE can support scientific research for the green transition, by having electronic platforms that bring together the academic and industrial sectors, as these platforms serve as incentives for cooperation, and facilitate the exchange of ideas, research results and best practices. By bridging the gap between academia and industry, these platforms enable efficient knowledge transfer, leading to the development of practical and sustainable solutions that can be implemented on a larger scale.
The third proposal focuses on the transfer and localization of knowledge, and this is an integral part of the scientific research movement in the UAE, through investing in the research and development sector and activating it by specialized councils, such as the Research and Development Council, which plays a central role in scientific research in the country. This may be, for example, through obtaining the latest technologies and adapting them to suit the local and international industrial challenges, while providing and training the national workforce. Thus, the UAE guarantees the effective application and implementation of scientific knowledge, and becomes one of the countries producing and exporting the knowledge economy. In addition, the localization of knowledge enables the UAE to meet its unique environmental challenges, while sharing its experiences and best practices with the global community.
As the UAE prepares to host the Conference of the Parties (COP 28), it is strengthening its commitment to the green transition, as the conference provides a global platform for discussions and cooperation on climate change and sustainability.
The scientific research movement in the UAE plays a pivotal role in supporting the green transition in the country, and by unifying research initiatives, developing supportive legislation, and having electronic platforms for cooperation, knowledge transfer and localization, the UAE paves the way for sustainable development and environmental preservation. In preparing for the “COP 28” conference, the global community will witness the UAE’s dedication to scientific research for a greener future. With continued efforts and cooperation, the UAE is in an excellent position to set an example in the quest to achieve a sustainable and environmentally conscious society through scientific research.
