The Council of Ministers has approved this Tuesday a Royal Decree to regulate the granting of up to 52 million euros to the autonomous communities to finance the creation of 751 places in the Degree in Medicine in public universities, which represents an increase of 15 percent compared to the previous year. At a press conference, the Government spokesperson and Minister for Territorial Policy and Public Function, Isabel Rodríguez, stressed that this measure aims to “facilitate the long-term increase in the availability of medical professionals to curb the deficit of health professionals in different specialties”. The spokesperson for the Executive has assured that this deficit is the “consequence” of a “prolonged decline in MIR public offerings between 2011 and 2018”, coinciding with most of the legislature of the PP Government of Mariano Rajoy. Since the motion of no confidence and the entry of Pedro Sánchez into the Executive, the spokesperson has defended that they have been carrying out “a policy of reversing these cuts with the increase in MIR positions, active retirement for some Medicine specialties or the largest public job offer of positions, with up to 11,600 in the last call”. Isabel Rodríguez has argued that this measure is aimed only at public universities because the Government has detected “an increase in graduates from private universities compared to public ones.” In any case, she has pointed out that the measure is “agreed” with the autonomous communities, which are “those that have jurisdiction in this area.” “With this strategy we support the autonomous communities in a competition as important as Health”, she stressed.
