There are few functions left but there is more than one reason to go see The Rake’s Race al Colon Theater (Tucumán 1171, CABA). The first, without a doubt, is because it is fairly represented in the most wonderful room in Buenos Aires, which in itself is a good program no matter what show is on. But the opera by Igor Stravinsky it has many attributes that make it permeable to all ages and styles of thought: in a cartoonish way proposes not to get carried away by the easy life, because it clouds the mind and things can end badly. In addition to the magnificent performances and one lots of people on stage as well as below (particularly the stable Orchestra and Choir of Colón) who work so that this performance comes out as impeccable as we see it, is the stage direction of the great Alfredo Arias, supported by the scenery of Julia Freid, the incredible wardrobe of Julio Suarez and the lighting of Matías Sendón.

In this English version by W. H. Auden and Chester Kallman (with simultaneous subtitles) tells the life of Tom Rakewell, a humble man and quiet that he is dating Anne Trulove, a young woman of good economic position. The girl’s father is not opposed to the engagement but hopes that the future son-in-law will get a stable job. Tom is a dreamer and he thinks he will have a stroke of luck. This occurs when a dark character as his name indicates, Nick Shadow, appears before the young man and tells him that is the heir of his uncle’s great fortune and that he has to go to London to collect it, also offering him his services, which he hopes to collect a year and one day from the date.

So Tom and Shadow embark on a colorful adventure during which the second puts it into the first in the world of pleasures and excessive expenses, while Anne continues to wait for the return of the groom. Throughout three acts and almost three hours of performance (with an interval) we will see all the trouble that the new millionaire gets into while we think “Do not do that!” all the time. And we gloat over beautiful images of a simple setting in terms of scenery but very showy in the costumes and otherwise colorful with the voices of the performers until we reach the epilogue, a delicious moment in which the protagonists go down the line once morest debauchery, a real delight.
Con great performances, especially the delicious Andrea Carroll as Anne and of Chistopher Purves like Shadow, he is all pleasure and sonority. In the representation that I saw, the orchestra was directed by Charles Dutriotbut in the added performance for July 26, the Stable Orchestra will be conducted by Kakhi Solomnishvili, while the Stable Choir maintains the direction of Miguel Martínez. In addition, the cast is numerous, enormousthere are many people on stagesomething that only in Colón can be given.

Aesthetically, the setting is unforgettable, with the (impeccable) chorus dressed in gray raincoats and red gloves while the brothel denizens Tom is taken to wear sequined, frilly skirts like those popularized at the Mouline Rouge and the nurses, on top, have white robes and veiled faces. Is really impressive what they achieve on a simple semicircle background of light wood. The highlight are the costumes of the leading ladies, Anne and Baba La Turca, marking in a colorful way and with a very rich appearance, the differences between Tom’s two suitors.
