The National Police Agency said that a total of 3,021 reports of receiving overseas mail from unknown sources had been received from all over the country by 5 pm today (25th).
On the 20th, following a report was received that a parcel delivered to a welfare facility for the disabled in Ulsan was suspected of containing gas poison, there were more than 3,000 similar reports in the past six days.
Of these, 1,976 cases were confirmed as false reports, and 1,45 cases were collected by the police and are being investigated.
By region, Gyeonggi had the most cases with 900 cases, followed by Seoul with 676 cases, Incheon with 159 cases, Chungnam with 147 cases, Gyeongbuk with 139 cases, and Busan with 120 cases.
The police believed that most of these mails were sent from China and entered the country via Taiwan, and requested cooperation from the Chinese public security department in the investigation.
While it has been confirmed that there is no suspicion of terrorism, the police judged the mail as a ‘brushing scam’ and are looking into whether charges such as unauthorized collection of personal information can be applied under the Information and Communications Network Act.
‘Brushing scam’ refers to sending unordered items to anyone and then posing as the recipient to post product reviews to manipulate ratings.
If the police find a yellow or black envelope with ‘CHUNGHWA POST’ and ‘POBox 100561-003777, Taipei Taiwan’ written on it, do not open it and ask to report it immediately to the nearest police station or 112.
