Preventing Scooter Accidents: The Risks of Riding with Multiple Passengers

2023-07-25 09:09:00

20% of scooter accidents are due to the presence of an extra and too many passenger on the vehicle. “Accidents which are sometimes also very serious”, says the policeman once more. “Often, the users do not wear a helmet and the fact of being two disturbs the driving of the machine which is not intended for this configuration, for example in the way of turning in the turns where the weight of two users can disturb the center of gravity and therefore the balance of the vehicle “.

While strolling in the city center of Brussels, one quickly notices that there are still a lot of users who drive two on these machines. For what ? They first explain that it is cheaper. Pay once for two people. Then, these users explain that sometimes, when they come home from a party or when they want to go for a ride together, they only find one scooter available in one place. To avoid having to turn for long minutes in search of another machine, they take the risk of climbing two above.

As soon as the scooter detects the presence of more than two feet, it will stop

Among the possible solutions to prevent having several people on a single scooter in the future, there is in particular a recognition system developed by an operator who rents these shared machines in Brussels, Pony. “We have placed sensors in the floor of the scooter which detect the number of feet present. So as soon as the scooter detects the presence of more than two feet, it will stop”says one at the French operator.

For now, Pony is one of eight brands rolling out shared scooters in Brussels. But that will change. On January 1, 2023, only two will remain. And the number of machines will also decrease drastically, from more than 20,000 today to a maximum of 8,000 according to the wishes of the Region. Everyone therefore wants to look good to the Brussels authorities in the months to come.

For the moment, riding with several people on the same scooter is punishable by a fine of 68 euros.
