A 58-year-old woman surnamed Lu from Nanning City, Guangxi Province in mainland China often felt intermittent pain in the chest and abdomen, accompanied by vomiting.

According to the “Nanguo Morning Post” report, Ms. Lu went to the doctor because of intermittent pain in the chest and abdomen. After examination, the doctor found that Ms. Lu’s liver bile ducts were severely dilated, which should be due to biliary obstruction infection. The follow-up doctor performed biliary drainage. During the drainage process, it was clear that there were worms crawling out of Lu Nu’s body in the indwelling drainage tube. The size and shape were basically the same as melon seeds.

The doctor explained that these were liver flukes, and it was they that caused Lu’s series of symptoms. After further questioning, the doctor learned that Lu’s family loves sashimi. Although I didn’t eat it myself, the chopping boards at home did not distinguish between raw and cooked. It is speculated that it may be cross infection.

Physicians said that following infection with liver flukes, mild cases have no clinical symptoms. After a long period of severe infection, a large number of parasites can cause symptoms such as bile retention, cholangitis, and intrahepatic stones. Without timely intervention, there is a risk of progression to liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer.

As for how to prevent liver fluke infection, the report pointed out that the first is to cook food thoroughly, and the second is to develop good habits. The chopping boards and knives for cutting meat and fruits and vegetables need to be separated and disinfected regularly.
