A camp of the Flemish youth movement Chiro was evacuated on Sunday evening in Gierle, in the municipality of Lille (province of Antwerp), due to flooding caused by heavy rainfall. The camp is currently maintained.
In total, nearly 125 young people had to leave their camp in Gierle, which was largely flooded. The tents also took on water. In consultation with the municipal administration, the members of the camp were transferred to rooms at the local Chiro and to a sports hall located nearby.
“Everything went smoothly and this alternative won’t be a problem for the next few days either”said acting mayor Vincent Goossens (N-VA).
The camp is not suspended at this time, but a return to the original camp site will be considered shortly. “It will depend, among other things, on the rain that will still fall in the days to come”said Mr. Goossens.
“This weekend, an event is planned in the sports hall. We have proposed alternatives to the camp leaders, who have yet to discuss it with their leaders. The youngest who were supposed to arrive at the camp on Monday will not finally come until Wednesday, if their arrival is confirmed”concluded the mayor.
