“Art is all around us”
She adds: “I’m going to insist above all on the fact that you shouldn’t get stuck in relation to the material you have. It is often necessary to remember that it is not the camera that makes the photo but the photographer. Admittedly, the tool is useful but in no case does it decide on the framing, the composition, the subject(s), the staging and the message it wishes to convey.”
To start, according to her, “you should not ruin yourself in professional equipment”. Starting with a phone “is fine to see the basics”. She herself started with a compact, having fun taking “everything and anything”. “It’s all regarding practicing, practicing, failing, learning, understanding and moving forward. Take a step back from your work constantly, renew your outlook and stimulate your imagination. Art is all around us, we just need to open our eyes, live consciously, breathe and be inspired.” She concludes: “You have to know the basics in order to be able to deconstruct them and free yourself from these rules in order to find your own path.”
Current contest
The theme of the 3rd edition of the Millimages des Récifs competition is: “Reefs, leisure”. Through this theme, the organizers wish to highlight all the sports and leisure activities that coral reefs allow, in particular surfing, an activity originating in the Pacific and honored at the 2024 Olympic Games.
The coral reef is a remarkable ecosystem in several respects. In particular, it provides coastal protection and offers a living space for nearly 30% of the marine species known to date in the ocean. The theme encourages to shed light on the positive relationships that humans and the reef can maintain through pictures showing the human leisure activities that take place in the coral reefs of French Polynesia.
The competition is organized by the Institute of Coral Reefs of the Pacific (IRCP), an institute of the Practical School of Advanced Studies which has worked for more than 10 years to preserve coral reefs. It is open to everyone until October 23. Entrants may submit up to three photos; photographs presenting the fauna and/or flora of the coral reefs of French Polynesia, according to the criteria corresponding to one of the four categories proposed.
A jury composed of five members and chaired by Lea Hahn, will judge all the photos sent to retain 15 photographs. A cultural committee, made up of four members, will choose, among all the photos sent, four inspiring photos and will write a short associated text. Finally, the public will also be able to vote.
