Once only required following being served at a dinner party in a restaurant, the tipping option is now offered every time you complete a transaction.

There are even a few restaurateurs who have programmed their transaction handset so that you are offered high percentages for an order that a few years ago was not considered eligible for tipping.

“Since the pandemic, we have seen machines appear with contactless payments that suggest percentages and it is percentages that are set by the person who programs the machine. The 10-15 and 18% that we might see a few years ago have been replaced by 20 and 25% sometimes. Which places the odious side of the customer not wanting to leave as much and in addition the mechanics are more complicated to leave an amount other than that which is proposed”, mentions Francois Pageau professor of the Institute of tourism and hotel industry of Quebec.

This abuse of the tipping option leads many people to ask themselves the question: Are changes necessary in the current system?

“There is tension between kitchen and room workers because it creates inequality between employees. There are also expectations from employees. There is a feeling of obligation when tipping should be optional or at least variable according to our satisfaction. Now we leave it more by obligation. When you launch the idea of reviewing the model, I’m all for it, but that involves changing laws and changing habits,” he says.

The tipping option is meant to be offered only when the customer obtains a service.

“Where I have a problem is when you ask for a tip before service. You should usually tip followingwards. The law provides minimum wages for dining room employees who provide service and delivery people who come to your home. This means that employees who serve you at the counter when ordering take-out are normally not entitled to tips, ”he underlines.
