The migration of storks seems to be shortened by the presence of tailed dumps in Spain and Morocco. As these vast rubbish dumps are condemned to close soon in Spain, the thousands of storks that occupy the Zwin of Knokke-Heist following winter are threatened. This is what emerges from the first results of a project presented by the managers of the natural park on Monday.
Zwin scientists have been conducting research on the life of storks for several years, in close collaboration with the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (IRSNB). By equipping the young storks with a transmitter, it was possible to map, among other things, the migration routes taken by the birds.
In order to better understand their winter activities, 23 storks have, since 2019, been equipped with transmitters. Among them, 13 individuals are still alive. In this year 2023, six additional storks have been equipped with a tracker. “It is a transmitter which combines a GPS, a GSM, a computer and a solar panel to ensure a permanent recharge of the battery. The transmitter is installed with a harness system on the back of the bird. It must be positioned well so that it corresponds to the body of the bird so that it disturbs it as little as possible“, explains Didier Vangeluwe, ornithologist at the Royal Institute of Natural Sciences of Belgium.
