The International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) decided, on Monday, to reject the appeal of the Association of Professional Players’ Agents once morest the new regulations for players’ agents, which were approved by the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA), for various reasons.
New FIFA regulations came into effect in January with the aim of imposing a fairer and more transparent transfer system in football, requiring players’ agents to obtain a license, banning multiple representations to avoid conflicts of interest, and capping agents’ fees.
After the current summer transfer window, and starting next October, only licensed agents will be allowed to work in the football industry.
In an official statement, FIFA welcomed the CAS decision, saying that it “fully confirms the legality, validity and suitability of the Football Agents Regulations.”
For its part, CAS clarified that FIFA’s football agent regulations do not violate laws in Switzerland, France and Italy, and the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement.
The new regulations for players’ agents also face litigation at the national level, for example, cases in Germany have been referred to the European Court of Justice for a ruling.
