Children from Matsubara Elementary School in Kagoshima City took on the challenge of swimming across Kinko Bay, a distance of regarding 4.2 kilometers from Sakurajima to Iso Beach.
Matsubara Elementary School’s long-distance swim across Kinko Bay began in 1926 (Taisho 15), and was suspended due to war and other factors.
On the 24th, 45 elementary school students from the 4th grade to the 6th grade who have been practicing since May participated.
(4th grade/first attempt) “It was tough at first, but with the guidance of the coaches and the guidance of the blue and yellow hats (5th and 6th graders), I’ve come this far. I want to do my best so that everyone can finish the swim.”
(6th grade / 3rd time) “I have been swimming for a long time during summer vacation practice, so I think I can do my best because I have gained confidence.”

About 2 hours following the start. Children can be seen at the beach on the opposite shore, regarding 4.2 kilometers away. All the participants made it to the goal safely under the watchful eye of their parents.

(4th grade/first attempt) “(Q. How was the 4km?) It was long.
(6th grade, 3rd time) “I was able to enjoy swimming with my friends.”

On the 25th, children from Shimizu Elementary School in Kagoshima City will take on the challenge of long-distance swimming.
