Malley Phare: The First Wooden Residential Tower in French-speaking Switzerland for Sustainable Living

2023-07-24 15:00:44

The first wooden residential tower in French-speaking Switzerland, owned by SUVA, will see the light of day in Prilly. Work on this elevation above the Malley Lumière shopping center began this spring. The building, named “Malley Phare”, aims to be exemplary from an energy and ecological point of view.

The 95 apartments of the 60-meter-high, 14-storey skyscraper will be delivered to their residents in early 2025. The building will be made of 80% wood from the Vaud forests.

“The planks of the slabs are mixed, made of wood and concrete. This wood-concrete is necessary for fire issues, but also for inertia and noise impact”, explains Monday in the 12:45 pm Hannes Ehrensperger, associate architect of the CCHE office.

A popular material

Wood is increasingly used in constructions, even the most daring ones. Since 2015, the new fire protection standards have authorized this material above 30m in height.

The SUVA, owner of the building, wants to be attentive to sustainable development in its investments. The 3000 m3 of spruce panels making up the “Malley Phare” tower are assembled in the north of Vaud. “This is the material we have at home and which must be exploited”, points out Jean-Marc Ducret, the director of the wooden construction company JPF Ducret in Orges (VD).

Under-exploitation of forests

Noble and durable, wood from Swiss forests has it all. However, this resource is under-exploited. Of the 10 million m3 of wood that grow each year in the country, only half is used.

“There is an explosion in demand for large wooden projects. Everyone – investors, industrialists – wants to have an ecological and sustainable development part in their constructions”, remarks Jean-Marc Ducret, however.

In this west of Lausanne, which is undergoing major restructuring, “Malley Phare” will also have a neighbor in a few years: the “Tilia” tower, also equipped with a mixed frame where wood predominates.
