On this Monday, July 24, 2023, Karl Malone celebrates his 60th birthday! For the occasion, we look back on his monumental performance once morest the Bucks one evening in January 1990.
Third leading scorer in NBA history (36,928 points), Karl Malone used to make his law reign in the racket every night. In 19 seasons in the Great League, he exceeded the bar of 20 points on average 17 times, 12 times that of 25 points and… 1 time that of 30 points during the 1989-90 season. Season in which he also set his career high on a game with 61 units in Utah win over Milwaukee.
We are on January 27, 1990, the day following the announcement of the holders of the All-Star Game… of which Karl Malone is not a part. Utah receives Milwaukee for a regular season meeting that the “Mailman” will leave its mark on. Upset not to have been retained as starter of the all-star gamehe pours all his frustration on the defense of the poor Bucks, totally helpless.

61 points at 21/26 in shooting and 19/23 in free throws, accompanied by 18 rebounds including 9 offensive.. Here is the rate imposed by Malone that evening, as if to say to the voters “Are you sure of your choice?”. The interior of the Jazz is clinical under the circle, often well served by his lifelong partner and best passer in NBA history, John Stockton. And even when he misses a shot, Karl takes his own offensive rebound and ends up scoring. Simply unstoppable.
The best in this story? Malone doesn’t even have to work hard to pull off this performance, as he only spends 33 minutes on the court. Utah indeed crushes Milwaukee 144 to 96, and allows itself to rest its star for long minutes. What would it have been like if he had played 40…
Karl Malone is 60 years old today, that makes him almost as many years lived as points scored that evening. A demonstration of power and domination that reflects his immense career, of which this 1989-90 season is not even the best!
