The researchers wanted to find out what influence certain components that are typically found in espressos have on the proteins that cause Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Tau proteins occur naturally in the brain and form supporting structures there. For Alzheimer’s and certain dementias these proteins clump together over time and form deposits around nerve cells of the brain. The cells atrophy and die as a result of the deposits.

Investigations in the test tube now showed how clumped tau proteins partially dissolved when floating in mixtures of caffeine and genistein. With higher concentrations of espresso extract, the proteins were better dissolved.

What’s happening now?

While the researchers’ findings are remarkable, we must not allow ourselves to be carried away to simple conclusions such as “espresso relieves Alzheimer’s”.

Only chemical reactions were examined in the laboratory experiment. There have been no trials and observations on humans. Conclusions regarding the effect of coffee consumption on diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia cannot be drawn from this research.

Nevertheless, the findings are interesting for science, because apparently certain substances from the espresso are bioactive. In further investigations it can now be researched how exactly caffeine concentrates affect tau proteins. In the future, therapies and drugs might be developed that make use of this connection.
