Enhancing Business Sustainability: The Banque de France Climate Rating Initiative

2023-07-24 07:30:00

In the current context of climate emergency, companies are increasingly called upon to take responsibility. They must now communicate the proportion of their balance sheet invested in a green way, known as the “green asset ratio”. For its part, the Banque de France, in collaboration with the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (Ademe), is launching a climate rating initiative for companies, as reported The echoes. This new indicator will allow each company to better understand its exposure to climate risks and align its strategy accordingly.

Growing climate obligations

Governor François Villeroy de Galhau declared that this project has no equivalent in Europe. Announced by the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, this climate rating was entrusted to the Banque de France. The French Banking Federation (FBF) also supports this project, emphasizing that the “Climate score”, established by the Banque de France, will supplement the analyzes carried out by the banks themselves.

A climate rating in the face of environmental issues

The implementation of this climate rating is a project that is gaining in urgency in the face of growing climate challenges, the impact of which is felt on business activity. Indeed, from 2024, the European Central Bank (ECB) will integrate exposure to climate risks in the credit risk rating, according to Hervé Gonsard, director general of services to the economy and the network at the Banque de France.

To ensure the development of this climate rating, a team of engineers was recruited to develop the methodology. This indicator, which will be both free but not public (unlike rating agency indicators), will focus exclusively on climate dimensions, and therefore does not threaten private agencies that cover other aspects such as biodiversity and corporate social policy.
