Last week a centennial Jewish temple located on Oncativo street in the City of Córdoba was demolished. This action is part of the work to widen Avenida Maipú. Some sacred pieces were left under the rubble to be transferred to another venue in the coming days. Leaving these highly important objects out in the open caused outrage among some Jews.
However, starting this Sunday at noon, police control was installed in the area to protect the historical heritage.
“There was a small lack of intelligence between the company that did the destruction, but everything is already solved. The place has police custody. Both the province, the municipality and the institution got to work and managed to save all the sacred objects. Everything is protected and the transfer of the objects is already being planned,” explained Adrián Ganzburg, president of Daia, that is, the political representative of the Jewish community.
The Municipality of Córdoba had expropriated the temple a year and a half ago. The place was no longer used for religious purposes for 10 years. The sacred pieces will be transferred and guarded in another Jewish headquarters on Sarmiento street in the city.
“When those pieces were demolished, they were hidden, so to speak, at the bottom of the rubble. They were naturally protected because they have a weight and precisely for this reason they have not been able to move immediately. The specialists calculate that approximately 12 people plus a mule are needed to get these objects”, commented Gustavo Guelbert, vice president of the Sephardic Israelite union.
The pieces correspond to a chandelier with seven arms and the tables of Moses, that is, the 10 commandments. This symbology has a deep feeling and a great importance for the Jews.
According to the temple authorities, the demolition was carried out late on Saturday and custody was placed this Sunday at noon. However, some Jews believe that leaving these historical items out in the open was dangerous.
“Leaving our symbols once morest a wall next to the rubble is disrespectful. For Catholics it is as if they left a cross and a virgin lying on the ground covered with dirt. Out of respect for the history of their cities, mayors would never demolish a church, a synagogue or a mosque hundreds of years old to widen a street. This is the only living history that we have left to show our children”, criticized the leader of the union of toll employees (Uecara), Gustavo Rossi, also a Jew of Sephardic origin.
Widening of Maipu Avenue
The project contemplates the extension of the trace from Sarmiento street to Oncativo. They are the last remaining blocks to conclude the process that will connect Ciudad Universitaria with the river and Las Heras-Elisa Park, which is currently in the process of revitalization.
At the end of the clearing of the sector, a new widening stage will begin that will add lanes and the boulevardization is expected to give continuity to the project carried out from Illia boulevard to Emilio Olmos avenue.
Chacabuco and Maipú avenues will form a more friendly passage for private transportation, passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians from Ciudad Universitaria to the Suquía River and Las Heras-Elisa Park.
