Temporary report

The provisional toll at midday stood at twelve dead, 21 injured, including five in “absolute emergency”, according to these same sources. The Laquintinie hospital in Douala said in a press release that it had taken care of “thirteen cases from this tragedy”, and recorded two deaths, including “a three-year-old girl and a 19-year-old girl”.

The eleven other people admitted are three children cared for in the pediatric emergency room, two teenagers, a young woman of 28 years, and five men, specifies the hospital. The authorities are on the spot to coordinate the help which clears the rubble with a mechanical shovel in the hope of finding survivors, indicated Mr. Elie Zang Zang.

In 2016, the collapse of a residential building killed five people in Douala, and the authorities raised the issue of compliance with building standards. In June of the same year, the authorities had identified 500 buildings “threatening ruins”.
