Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman announced on Tuesday that the Gulf state had agreed to buy Turkish drones during President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to the Kingdom. According to the minister, the agreement aims to “improve the readiness of the Kingdom’s armed forces and strengthen its defense and manufacturing capabilities”.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman attended the signing ceremony between Turkish defense company Baykar and Saudi Arabia’s Defense Ministry. Details of the signed contract were not specified.

The CEO of Turkish drone manufacturer Baykar, Haluk Bayraktar, tweeted the signing of an “export and cooperation agreement” for the MALE Akinci drone. “This is the biggest defense and aerospace export contract in the history of the Republic of Turkey,” he said.

The two leaders also attended the signing ceremony of a defense cooperation plan “in accordance with military and defense cooperation efforts between our two friendly countries.” Additionally, Turkey and Saudi Arabia have signed several MoUs in different sectors including energy, real estate and direct investment.
