The bus, carrying more than sixty passengers, left Bhandaria in Pirojpur around 9:00 am and overturned into a roadside pond at Chatrakanda on the Barishal-Khulna highway around 10:00 am. The survivors blamed the negligence of the driver for the accident. It is also alleged that the bus, which might carry barely 52 passengers, was loaded with too many passengers.

Most of the dead are from Bhandaria upazila of Pirojpur and Rajapur area of ​​Jhalkathi. Barishal Divisional Commissioner MD Shaukat Ali confirmed that all 17 died on the spot. The injured have been admitted to the hospital.

Meanwhile, bus accidents are common in Bangladesh. According to the Road Safety Foundation (RSF), there were 559 road accidents in June alone. 562 people died and 812 people were injured in the accidents.
